VIS G11 Wendy

A Philanthropic Aspiration Motivated by Baking – VIS Student Wendy Lo Helds Charity Bakesale to Fundraise for Orphaned Children at Chung Yi Social Welfare Foundation.

"Every child deserves to be protected, cherished, and loved" is the starting quote and the driving force behind Wendy's dedication to start fundraising as the president and the founder of VIS Charity Fundraising Club.

Wendy has developed great interest in baking and dessert making since elementary school after joining the dessert club, and have always been hoping to bring happiness, warmth, and joy through foods. As she becomes an 11th grader, Wendy further transformed this passion into action, establishing the VIS Charity Fundraising Club at VIS International Experimental Education Institution, hoping to utilize student efforts and contribute to those in need in the society. Her first beneficiary is Chung Yi Social Welfare Foundation, where her mother had previously participated in fundraising for orphaned children's long-term care. The Foundation is one of the only two childcare institutions in Taiwan that can adopt children under the age of three. Since children under three are more prone to illness during their development and many of them require support, such as early intervention and company in language development, emotional care, and overall growth due to dysfunctional families, the costs and manpower needs are far higher than those in typical orphanages.

Wendy stated that the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1-17) have always been an important framework in her learning journey while studying in VIS. In particular, SDG 3 "Good Health and Well-being" and SDG 4 "Quality Education" have specifically allowed her to realize that not every child has a safe environment and educational opportunities like she did when growing up. Therefore, after learning about the Chung Yi Foundation's long-standing Dandelion Sponsorship Program, Wendy was deeply touched and decided to assist the foundation through fundraising for orphaned children in Chung Yi 's living cost, including education, medical care, and growth support during their placement period. She sincerely hopes that these children can grow up healthily in love and companionship and have the opportunity to embrace a bright future.

To further fundraise, Wendy and her fellow club members held a charity bake sale using handmade desserts at the Taipei Yuanshan Expo Park on Mother's Day (May 9, 2026). Wendy made a total of 80 scones and led the club members in promoting and selling them. The event also invited the well-known Keelung-based "Bonjour Bakery" to participate, providing two types of French baguettes to support the bake-sale. Despite the unpredictable weather on the day of the sale, Wendy's stand still attracted a large number of people to try out and purchase the products. The atmosphere was lively, and all items were sold out in two hours, raising over NT$10,000 of funds, donated directly to Chung Yi Foundation. On the same day, Chung Yi also presented the club a certificate of appreciation, thanking the students for their care and support for orphaned children.

In addition, since its fundraising campaign began in April, 2026, the VIS Orphaned Children Caring Initiative now have gained nearly 130 donations, raising almost NT$500,000 by Mother's Day, fully demonstrating the public's care and support towards orphaned children. The fundraising project is expected to continue until the end of this year, hoping to help more children receive the care and support they deserve and grow up in safety. In the future, Wendy also hopes to further collaborate more charity resources and continue to raise
awareness of the issues related to orphaned children and dysfunctional families through charity sales, fundraising, and cross-sector collaborations, therefore to make charity not only just events, but warmth and influence that can be continuously passed on.

Finally, Wendy, who is currently preparing to apply to universities abroad in her 12th grade, further shared that: "Though I will leave Taiwan to study abroad in the future, but I truely hope I could do something helpful towards my commmunity before I leave, so that my youth isn't just about academics and examinations, but also about bringing warmth and hope to others." She hopes to use her last high school year in Taiwan to turn her passion for desserts, public welfare, and social care into practical actions, leaving the most meaningful memories in her youth.
