VIS Discover Taipei Rehearsal

Last Saturday (June 27), the VIS Discover Taipei club hosted its final tour of the semester. Students led guests on a guided visit to Gi-Kong Church and the Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park.

Before we officially review the final tour, let's take a look at how the students acquired knowledge and honed their guiding skills step-by-step to complete this learning journey.

Club members first headed to Gi-Kong Church in Da'an District for an on-site field study. Under the thoughtful guidance of church members, students learned about the history of the Lin Family Massacre through the space, historical artifacts, and oral accounts. With this visit, they gained a deeper understanding of human rights conditions during Taiwan's White Terror period.

Students next visited the Dr. Chen Wen-chen Memorial Foundation, where Mr. 龍三 from the foundation personally introduced the Chen Wen-chen Incident alongside the life stories of several other political victims from the martial law era. Students were able to gradually built their understanding of Taiwan's modern history through engaging in discussions. They also learned how to translate complex historical issues into engaging tour content accessible to the general public.

Before the final tour, the Discover Taipei Club visited the Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park for a rehearsal and interview with Mr. Fred Him-San Chin, a survivor of Taiwan's White Terror era.

After months of research and preparation, students practiced their English-guided tours throughout the memorial park, refining both their content and presentation skills at each stop to ensure they were fully prepared for the upcoming final tour.

During the rehearsal, the students invited a foreign visitor touring the memorial to join a trial tour. The visitor, Jackson from Canada, was only able to stay for about ten minutes before leaving for the airport, but he was deeply impressed by the students' fluent English, thorough historical knowledge, and confident presentation. His encouragement and positive feedback gave the students an extra boost of confidence.

The students then conducted an interview with Mr. Fred Him-San Chin. They asked thoughtful questions about Taiwan's efforts toward transitional justice, the importance of historical education, and how younger generations can better understand this chapter of history. Through hearing Mr. Chin's firsthand experiences, students were able to understand how values of freedom, democracy, and human rights continue to shape Taiwanese society today.

As always, we believe the most meaningful learning happens when students connect with the real world. Students engage in field research, historical investigation, guided tours, and interviews that cultivate historical thinking, cultural empathy, and global citizenship. Every journey through the city becomes an opportunity for meaningful growth.

Discover Taipei
