SPA Field Trip to Longshan Temple

Last week, students in Dr. Brittney Nicole Judkins’ Introduction to Sociology, Psychology, & Anthropology (SPA) class visited Taipei’s historic Longshan Temple (龍山寺) for a field observation exercise.
The purpose of this trip was social observation, and students examined how different people behave in a sacred public space, as well as ritual practices, social norms, conformity, and the subtle ways expectations are maintained within a community.
Students also considered their own perspectives as observers by applying cultural relativism to interpret what they witnessed rather than judging unfamiliar practices through their own assumptions.
The visit forms part of a comparative analysis with their earlier observations at Da’an Park a week prior, allowing students to understand how social norms and human behavior may differ across public spaces.
