One of the most valuable experiences for me in Europe was the interview with #AmbassadorHsieh. #謝志偉大使

Although I have interviewed many different ambassadors, #AmbassadorHsieh is one of the most special ones. Instead of climbing up from the diplomatic system with strict hierarchy, he was directly appointed by the president as #Taiwan’s representative in Germany. Many people in the newspaper doubted their professionalism. However, I was extremely impressed with his unique background. He grew up in a strict “#Chinese” heritage family. Then, as he studied abroad in Germany, he was exposed to different ideas that contradict with his family’s doctrine for a reunified China. The free and critical air of the #German university has truly influenced him, he says.

I was deeply influenced by his life story and philosophy. My father works in China; therefore, I often reflect on the cross-strait relationship between Taiwan and mainland China. I often think the relationship is a dilemma between national sovereignty and economic prosperity. Although all people on the island want a democratic Taiwan; however, the tradeoff is inevitably a loss of economic opportunity. The ambassador provided a new perspective — although living under pressure, we should still maintain our critical thinking and independent consciousness.

I aspired to be an independent thinker that changes the world, just like #AmbassadorHsieh.
