Yesterday afternoon, students at VIS JH engaged in a spirited and thought-provoking group debate as part of their Interactive Chinese class!
The debate centered around two timely and impactful topics:
“Do you believe social media has a more positive than negative impact on teenagers?”
“Using Taiwan as an example, do you agree with having gender marked on official identification documents?”
In the social media debate, the proposition argued that online bullying poses serious risks to teens' mental health, linking the rise in self-harm and suicide to social platforms. The opposition countered that, when used responsibly, social media can foster support networks and provide valuable learning resources. They emphasized the importance of personal digital literacy rather than blaming technology outright.
For the gender marker debate, the opposition defended the rights of transgender individuals, asserting that gender markers are outdated and supported their stance with relevant statistics. The proposition maintained that the current system causes minimal disruption to society and suggested offering more flexible options rather than removing the marker altogether.
After both debates, results were announced and the judges commended the students for their clear reasoning, quick thinking, and articulate delivery. A big thank you to all the teachers whose guidance made this meaningful event a resounding success!
