Byron Clarke's Vision: Revolutionizing Education Through Project-Based Learning
Interviewer and Editor by: Frankie Yeh
Who? Why? How? Three words remain central to Project Based Learning Director. Byron Clarke as he embarked on a journey to create a program more than textbooks and multiple-choice questions. Recognizing the need for a hands-on approach to education, one which allows discussion, analysis, and solution to real-world problems, Byron is determined to bring the definitive practical experience fused with his academic knowledge to the classroom.
Byron emphasizes connection with local communities to gain deeper understanding of issues affecting students’ immediate surroundings, encouraging active problem exploration in the local context. The school collaborates with local businesses, organizations, and community partners to bring these issues to life for the students, whether through networking, formal introductions, or student led dialogue.
At the core of PBL is critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with specific emphasis on defining problems of students’ genuine interest. Such intrinsic motivation drives students to analyze issues, explore solutions and critically evaluate their own learning, with priority on the process over rote memorization, instilling in students the motivation for lifelong self-improvement.
PBL celebrates diversity, not just in terms of nationality, race or religion but also in personality, skills, and goals. Students from various backgrounds collaborate in cross-functional teams, exposing them to a range of perspectives and alternate experiences fundamental to creating well-rounded individuals who can thrive in a diverse and ever changing world.
Through engagement with international competitions and organizations like Wharton Business School and Durham University, Byron introduces to students global challenges, encouraging them to think beyond their personal lives. Whether it's discussing UN Sustainable Development Goals or addressing topics like fast fashion waste, PBL encourages students to explore the global implications of their choices.
