Fostering Creativity and Community Engagement: Insights from Austin at VIS

Interviewer and Editor by: Frankie Yeh

VIS Creative Director Austin Brigman discusses perceptions on the value of arts education, emphasizing the importance of providing students with effective instruction and mindset to appreciate and enjoy creative arts. Last year under Austin's leadership, the Creative Department introduced a multi-disciplinary creative partnership project within the Elective Showcase, providing students with a platform to exhibit their work, involving drama, music, visual arts, and makerspace, expressing excitement about not only the students' talents but also the power of interdisciplinary teaching.

Through community partnerships, Austin highlights how PBL projects at VIS incorporate local community groups or needs. From examining the value of student voices in the school community to fundraising and assisting with sheltering stray dogs, PBL under Austin emphasizes authenticity and depth, allowing students to work on real-world issues, fostering a sense of responsibility and active participation within the local community.

PBL, according to Austin, is an ideal method for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The PBL cycle of do, critique, and reflect promotes continuous improvement and helps students understand that failure is an integral part of the learning process. As skill is knowledge put into action, PBL encourages students to apply learned information in an active and hands-on education curriculum more than standardized tests and grades.

Whether through community partnerships, subject-specific lenses, or cultural exchange programs, Austin aims to broaden students' perspectives and awareness of the world, promoting collaboration among diverse student groups through a welcoming and accepting environment. VIS emphasizes respect for everyone, fostering an atmosphere where students learn and work together, building bonds and mutual understanding.

Incorporating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) into projects, Austin embeds social and environmental responsibilities into the curriculum. Referring back to previous projects on urban gardening, specialized graphic design for the elderly, and environmental cleanups, Austin notes progress made on sustainable education integration and reiterates the program’s emphasis on global responsibilities and citizenship.

Austin's insights provide a comprehensive understanding of VIS's commitment to nurturing creativity, fostering a diverse environment, and promoting global citizenship. Through PBL, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a focus on social and environmental responsibilities, VIS and the PBL program stands as a beacon of innovative education that prepares students for a dynamic and interconnected world.
