Fostering Global Citizenship: Flora's Journey at VIS

Interviewer and Editor by: Frankie Yeh

With a penchant for leadership and passion for business management, VIS outstanding alumna Flora Lin’s fascination with the inner workings of companies led her to choose a path in business management. Having run simulated companies during her time at VIS, she developed a deep curiosity about how real-world businesses operate, start, and conduct their affairs.

VIS and the PBL program introduced Flora to local issues and encouraged her to participate in school activities and projects tied to the community, highlighting various opportunities to create positive change right in her backyard. One memorable project addressed small animal abuse, a prevalent issue in Taiwan and beyond, showing her the tangible impact one can have on a local issue, reinforcing the idea that change starts close to home.

VIS encourages creative interpretations to guide questions and situation evaluation from students’ unique perspectives. Flora's internships further highlighted the practicality of the skills she gained at VIS, applying digital marketing strategies learned during the VIS Radio project in her current marketing internship, underscoring the real-world relevance of the school's teachings.

VIS and the PBL program consistently expose students to global social, environmental, and geopolitical landscapes. With a diverse range of driving questions each semester, students delve into different aspects of the world, broadening their perspectives. Flora emphasized the value of working with fellow students from various backgrounds, each contributing their unique skills and viewpoints to project teams.

Flora upholds global citizenship and encourages peers to fulfill responsibilities related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) concepts through focusing on local and community-based issues each year, helping create an environment where students see the connection between their learning and the world around them, motivating students like Flora to identify problems and actively work toward solutions.
